An old English story:

A poor young couple loved each other dearly.

Wife loved a pair of beautiful combs in a store but they were too expensive to afford. She had very beautiful hair.

Husband had an old ancestral wrist watch and he could not have its worn out strap replaced due to no money.

During Christmas, husband sells his old ancestral watch to buy her the combs (to surprise her).

Wife sells her hair to buy her husband watch strap (without his knowledge).

When they gift each other, wife has no hair to use the combs on and the husband has no watch to put the strap on!
